Baby's Umbilical Cord Blood Can Cure Disease, This Is The Fact

Some parents may choose to save the umbilical cord of a newborn baby, but not with the blood. In fact, cord blood can help cure diseases in the future. Is that true? Cord blood is blood found in the umbilical cord (umbilical cord) and placenta after the baby is born. This blood is believed to be used to treat various diseases. If you are pregnant and plan to save cord blood after your baby is born, it's better to find out the facts first.

For what is stored cord blood?

Cord blood contains many stem cells or stem cells that play a role in the development of various tissues, organs, and body systems. Stem cells found in each part of the body can change and grow into other cell types. Although it was first known as part of aesthetic anti-aging therapy, stem cells actually have a lot of useful potential. The benefits of stem cells until now continue to be researched and developed as a solution to various health problems that have been difficult to handle. Through the process of stem cell transplantation, body cells that have been damaged due to disease can be replaced with stem cells, which triggers the regeneration of body cells. This is the reason why these cells can be used to help patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and arthritis, as well as various other conditions ranging from autism, brain injury, stroke, to cancer. The baby's cord blood can be stored to be donated to others or used later in the day. If you want to donate to someone else, there is an umbilical cord blood bank that provides storage services for a certain fee and time period.

Cord Extraction Process

The process of taking cord blood is done around 30-60 seconds after the baby is born. The doctor will clamp and cut the umbilical cord, then insert the needle into the umbilical vein in the umbilical cord that is still attached to the placenta. Then blood flows to be collected. From this process generally can collect 1-5 ounces of blood. The process that lasts for approximately 10 minutes can be done either for mothers who give birth normally or by cesarean section. After the blood collection process is carried out, the blood is then stored in a sealed bag, then sent to a laboratory or cord blood bank to be examined and stored. Although it may not have been commonly heard, this procedure has actually been performed in several large hospitals and laboratories in Indonesia. However, some services are still research in nature which requires several stages before the procedure can begin. Stem cell services are now regulated by PERMENKES number 32, 2018. Stating that stem cell therapy services must be evidence-based medicine and already have service standards.

Should Storing Cord Blood?

So, is it necessary or not to save the baby's cord blood? In fact, blood stored for oneself is rarely used for two reasons, namely:
  • Not for all diseases

  • Although it is said to be used to treat more than 80 diseases, in fact the umbilical cord blood cannot be used to treat all types of diseases. One of them is a disease caused by genetic mutations. This disease cannot be treated because genetic disorders are also present in these stem cells.
  • Have limited time

  • Cord blood has a limited time, so it cannot be stored for a long time. According to the latest research, this blood can only be used before the 15th year since the baby is born. There is no known risk that might occur if cord blood is used after 15 years.
For these two reasons, storage of cord blood is recommended if there are family members who need treatment with stem cells. If there is no need, it is better to store cord blood in a public blood bank, so that it can be useful for others. Apart from these two reasons, there are many things that still make this action quite difficult. Among them, social value, limited facilities, benefits that are still under development, to the cost that is not cheap. After understanding the positive and negative sides of cord blood storage, you can make your own choices. If you are interested in storing cord blood, you should consult a doctor and the hospital first so that all procedures can run smoothly.
